Indians set to begin the 2022-23 Season

As summer comes to an end the beginning of the 2022-23 hockey season is about to begin.  The team reported to the Sault on August 27th and have been skating every day to prepare for the upcoming season.  The Indians will open the season with a couple of exhibition games this weekend against the Green Bay Jr Gamblers to prepare for the Tier 1 showcase in Troy Michigan the following weekend to start the MAHA League action.  Friday Sept 9 at 6pm the Indians will open the season against the Oakland Jr Grizzilies, then Saturday at 9am follow up against Little Caesars for the first two league games of the MAHA Tier 1.  Sunday at 9am the Indians will finish the weekend taking on the guest team the Chicago Mission.

Indians continue to excel

Since the completion of the Soo Indians season at the Michigan Amatuer Championships two players that remained in the Sault as affiliate players for the Soo Eagles of the Norther Ontario Junior League have made their mark in the first round of the playoffs garnering league honors for the their production.  Both Alex Fruend and Colin Handy have played big parts in the Eagles success in the first round of the playoffs to advance past the Sudbury Cubs and now face the cross border rivals Soo Thunderbirds in the next series.  All the Soo Indians staff wish them the best of luck and continues success.

ALEX FREUND, (F) SOO EAGLES - Making the most of his efforts, Freund contributed mightily for the Eagles, helped them take the first two match-ups against Greater Sudbury.

In Game 1, the 18 year old from Neenah, Wis., nothched the decider in overtime Friday, in his league playoff debut.

Then in Game 2, Freund assisted on the night's initial tally, then scored once more as the Eagles went up 2-0 on the Cubs.

Joining the Eagles line-up back in March, he has already matched his point total from the dozen regular season contests he appeared in.

COLIN HANDY, (D) SOO EAGLES - The Eagles' blueliner from Lennox MI., piled up five points for his side in being one of the factors in his club's series triumph over the Greater Sudbury Cubs.

Handy provided a pair of tallies and registered three assists to lead his team offensively last week.

Heading into the Eagles' West Division Final match-up with the rival Soo Thunderbirds, he leads all NOJHL defencemen in playoff scoring with six points.

Indians Spring Skates

The Soo Indians AAA will be having spring evaluation skates for potential players for the upcoming 2022-23 season.  The Dates for the skates will be April 9th from 4-6pm and April 10th 10-12am, the ice time will be at the Taffy Abel Arena on the campus of Lake Superior State University with a cost of $20.  Interested players should contact Dan Lasley at 906-322-1143 or Mike Kaunisto at 906-440-0157 to reserve your spot for the weekend.

Indians fall to Victory Honda

In a must win game to move in State Championships the Indians needed to win over Victory Honda.  Victory Honda got on the board in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  The Indians battled back when Seve Litz scored from Kole Altergott, then Cole Peterson banged home a rebound off a shot by Altergott to even the score at 2 a piece.  Honda regained the lead midway through the third period then added a empty net goal to secure the win.  Taylor White played outstanding in net for the Indians.

With the loss it ends  the 2021-22 season.

Indians fall to Little Caesars in the second game of States

Thursday in the second game of the MAHA State Championships the Indians fell to Little Caesar's 7-1.  Caesars got on the board late in the first period to hold a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period and added two more in the second for a 3-0 lead through two periods.  Kole Altergott finally got the Indians on the board from Cole Peterson early in the third period however that would be all of the scoring for the Indians and Little Caesars continued their scoring adding three more for the 7-1 win.  Taylor White had the duties in net for the Indians.

The Indians will now regroup to play Victory Honda tomorrow at 530 for a chance to move on to the semi finals Sunday at 3pm.
